CE marking costs one thing above all, your working time. This article breaks down the five real cost blocks, with honest ranges instead of false precision.
The key message first: there is no CE fee
The CE mark is not awarded by an authority and not “issued” by a test body. The manufacturer affixes it on its own responsibility after completing the conformity assessment procedure. Strictly speaking, the colloquial term “CE certification” is therefore misleading: for the vast majority of machines nobody checks from outside, there is no certificate and no fee invoice from the state.

Cost block 2: buying standards
Harmonised standards trigger the presumption of conformity, but the texts of the standards themselves are not free. Budget roughly €50 to €350 per standard (as of 2026). A concrete example: DIN EN ISO 13849-1 (safety-related parts of control systems) costs around €337.50 as a PDF from DIN Media. Since three to ten standards quickly become relevant for a typical machine, procurement alone adds up to a mid three-figure to low four-figure sum.
Important: usually more expensive than the purchase is the research into which standards apply at all. Anyone who applies the wrong or a withdrawn standard here loses the presumption of conformity, and in case of doubt many hours of rework.
Cost block 3: external consulting, day rates and when it pays off
CE consultants and engineering service providers in the German-speaking region mostly charge by effort. According to industry figures, typical day rates for product compliance and machinery safety consulting are around €600 to €2,000 per day, frequently in the four-figure range (as of 2026, depending on qualification, region and project scope). For the complete outsourcing of a CE marking, service providers quote orders of magnitude of roughly €3,000 to €15,000 for simple machines; for complex plants and linked systems, €15,000 to €50,000 and more is realistic.
External support makes most sense on a selective basis: as a review instance for the first CE project, for classifying borderline cases (substantial modification, partly completed machinery), for Annex IV machinery or for the validation of safety-related control systems. Cost block 4: notified body, only for high-risk machinery
A common misconception: most machines do not need an external test body. As a rule, the manufacturer may carry out the conformity assessment itself (internal checks on production). Only for the high-risk machinery listed in Annex IV of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, from 20 January 2027 Annex I of the EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, may a notified body have to be involved, for example for certain presses, woodworking machines or vehicle lifts.

An honest assessment: what software does not do
